Wegovy is the brand, semaglutide the active ingredient. The tablet is the once-daily version of the weekly Wegovy injection.
Semaglutide is taken by mouth as a tablet, rather than by injection. It belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
It contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. Tablet and injection doses are measured differently, so the milligram numbers aren't comparable.
The MHRA approved the semaglutide (Wegovy) tablet on 11 June 2026, granted to Novo Nordisk. It was the first GLP-1 tablet approved for weight loss in the UK.
A simple explanation of what this type of medicine does in the body.
GLP-1 is a hormone your body releases after eating. Semaglutide acts on the same receptors that hormone works on.
Acting on those receptors influences the signals involved in hunger and feeling full, helping you feel fuller for longer.
It is approved for use together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not on its own.
Average body weight lost over 64 weeks by people taking the 25 mg tablet alongside diet and exercise in the OASIS 4 clinical trial. Individual results vary.
Unlike the injection, the tablet has to be taken a particular way for your body to absorb it properly.
Take it after fasting for at least 8 hours, so first thing in the morning works for most people.
Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of plain water. Don't split, crush or chew it.
No food or drink for at least 30 minutes. Eating or drinking sooner lowers how much is absorbed.
One tablet daily, with the dose stepped up gradually by your prescriber.
The MHRA approval for weight management covers adults who meet the criteria below.
These criteria describe who the medicine is approved for. They do not decide whether it is right for any individual.
Final suitability requires an appropriate clinical assessment that takes account of your full medical history, other medicines you take and your general health. A prescriber may conclude that this treatment is not appropriate for you.

The MHRA information states a minimum of one month at each dose level.
This page is general information. It is not dosing advice for any individual. A prescriber decides the dose and any change to it, and you should never adjust a prescribed dose yourself.
Same active ingredient, different routine. The tablet suits people who would rather not inject.
The MHRA information says people already treated privately with the 2.4 mg weekly injection can move straight to the 25 mg tablet. Our clinicians will advise on the safest way to switch based on your current dose and treatment history.
See Wegovy injection doses & pricingLike all medicines, semaglutide can cause side effects. The MHRA lists these stomach and bowel effects as common.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Anyone prescribed this medicine should read the patient information leaflet supplied with it.
